# Manage notifications

> Track activity in the notification bell, and use the notification settings to customize which messages, comments, assignments, and project updates reach you.

## Use the notification bell

The bell in the app header is your central inbox. It shows recent activity that may need your attention — messages, mentions, comment activity, assignments, requests, and access changes — all in one place.

* **Unread activity:** the bell changes color when something is waiting — amber for unread notifications, and red when someone has mentioned you.
* **Quick access:** select a notification to go straight to the source, whether that is a comment, a kanban card, a request, or a shared item.
* **Managing the list:**
  * **Review:** open the list to see your recent activity.
  * **Clear:** closing the list marks the notifications you viewed as read. Select **Clear all** to empty the current list.

## Choose a notification preset

You decide how much project activity you are notified about. A **preset** sets that level in one step — each one switches on a different set of the optional notifications, from the quietest to everything.

1. Open **Settings**.
2. Select **Notifications**.
3. Choose a preset as your starting point.
4. Adjust individual notification types when needed.

| Preset | Best for | What you receive |
| - | - | - |
| **Essential** | Minimal interruption | Only the access and sharing updates that are always on |
| **Balanced** | Most people, most of the time | Direct messages, Circles mentions, replies to your comments, comments on your files, kanban assignments, and access requests |
| **Everything** | Following a project closely | Everything in Balanced, plus every Circles message and project membership changes |

<Note>
  Access and sharing updates stay on in every preset, so you do not miss changes that affect your ability to work in Collivo. The **Notifications** page lists them under **Always On**.
</Note>

## Adjust individual notifications

Customize the preset when your role requires a different level of attention:

* **Messaging:** direct messages, Circles mentions, or all Circles messages.
* **Comments:** replies to your comments and new comments on your files.
* **Kanban:** cards assigned to you.
* **Requests:** access requests that need your approval.
* **Projects:** membership changes.

**Example:** A project manager might enable membership changes and all Circles messages, while a contributor might keep the Balanced preset and focus on mentions, replies, assignments, and requests.

## Expected result

The notification bell highlights work that needs your attention, and your preferences reduce optional updates that are not relevant to your role.

## Troubleshooting

* **A notification does not appear:** open **Settings → Notifications** and confirm that its category is enabled.
* **You receive too many updates:** choose a quieter preset, then enable only the individual categories you need.
* **A notification opens content you cannot access:** your access may have changed after the notification was created. Ask the item owner or a project manager to review your permissions.
* **The unread count does not clear:** open the bell, review the unread items, and close the list. Use **Clear all** to remove the current list.
